Today Let's Read, "Capybara is friends with everyone" by Maddie Frost
Humor, friendship and adorable animals
I’ve always loved picture books, but in the last couple of years I’ve been taking writing and illustration classes, studying picture books and learning more about what goes into making them great. Earlier this year I started a journey to find what I call my “picture book friends”: books that I’d like my future books to hang out next to on the shelves. It’s not just an act of pure joy to read picture books every day, it really helps me see where I might fit into the industry.
I’ll be sharing some of my picture book friends with you every Monday so we can talk about why I think they’re successful. I encourage you to share your favorites in the comments - I’d love to read them too!
First up is the hilarious and delightful, Capybara is Friends with Everyone by Maddie Frost.
What makes me pick it up:
A. It’s got a Capybara as the star. I mean, come on. How cute is that? Of course I want it. Check.
B. It’s got a ton of stylized animals in fun colors and it is clearly about friendship, a topic I love. Check.
C. It’s got a sense of humor and is delightful. It makes me smile. Check.
What makes the writing great: This book is a wonderful example of a circle book. It starts with, “Being a great friend means going above and beyond. Take it from me—I have 4,382 friends.” and ends with, “And sometimes it means doing nothing at all. Take it from me—I have 4,383 friends.” The last sentence beautifully reflects the first and brings it all back home.
Why I’ll read it multiple times: It’s relatable, silly and fun for kids while also appealing to grownups who are reading it aloud. It sets a good example of friendship without being didactic. Does it have a satisfying ending? Check.
Do you have a favorite picture book about friendship? Please share it in the comments. I’d love to know what you’re reading.
My favourite picturebook about friendship is Leon and Bob by Simon James. The entire story takes place around the front steps of a home. It is both realistic and magical at once. The kind of magic we see every day.
