I’ve never thought of designing for impact, so thinking this way is a new tool I could try! I like getting lost in pages, I think this is influenced by Richard Scary books, as a kid scanning through a picturebook with your eyes feels like actually being and moving through the author/illustrator’s world!
Ooh, yes! Getting lost in pages is also one of the joys in picture books for sure! I think the whole product of the book itself is a magical storytelling medium. We, as illustrators and designers get to direct this story and decide on pacing: which pages will the readers linger on? Which page turns will be the huge impact pages that wow the reader? What happens when you linger for a long time on one spread and then that is followed by a bold, impactful spread? How can pacing and page turns play into the emotions the reader is feeling or give them the joy of discovering tiny details? I feel so lucky that we get to play in this arena!

Great examples! I recently bought Julian is a Mermaid book and was blown away by the beautiful art
Really gorgeous, right? I love the pacing of that book and the line quality of the art.
